Club NewsIn January 2008, the Club partnered with Yorkwoods Public School To provide books to be awarded to students who meet individual literacy goals set by their teachers. Every month, each classroom teacher names two students who have met their targets. They each choose a book from the Kiwanis-sponsored Reading Room to take home and enjoy! In 2008, some 350 books were presented at monthly school assemblies. The Club has donated $1,500.00 to this project for 2009. Yorkwoods is an elementary school located in the Jane-Finch area of the Toronto. The local population contains a large number of children whose first language is not English. Programs aimed at improving literacy are therefore very important to the school. Signs on display in the school recognize the Kiwanis Reading Awards Program. The Club has sponsored a new member of the Kiwanis family in North York. Northview Heights Key Club was organized on October 27, 2008 and is planned to be chartered on May 6 by Kiwanis District Governor Sharon Cameron-Dunn of South St. Catherine, Jamaica. Its members are all students at Northview Heights Secondary School. Key Club is the oldest and largest service program in the world for high school students. It succeeds because it is student-led and teaches leadership through serving others. Key Club members build themselves as they build their schools and communities. The Kiwanis International "One-Day" project is an annual event when every Kiwanis club in the world is asked to undertake a community activity that day. On Saturday, April 4 we chose to clean up G. ROSS LORD PARK, North York. It looked considerably better at 1 p.m.than it had at 10 a.m. What made the difference? Hard work by Kiwanians with invaluable help from 5 members of the Northview Heights Secondary School Key Club and 6 T.Y.P. (Total Youth Programs) members. Everyone set to with a will and cleaned up sections of the park. Astoundingly, Key Clubber SAAD TATETER found a $100 bill and generously donated it to the club! Aided by Toronto Parks & Recreation Dept.staff, bags of waste, garbage and dead leaves were filled and removed in preparation for Spring. Hats off to everyone who took part – a terrific joint effort and hopefully a precursor to more teamwork in the future with our young associates.
