Club News
In January 2008, the Club entered into a partnership with Yorkwoods Public School to provide books which would be awarded to students who meet individual literacy goals set by their teacher. Every month, each classroom teacher names 2 students who have achieved their goals to be awarded books that they can take home and enjoy! So far in 2008, approximately 350 books have been awarded at monthly assemblies. As part of the program, Kiwanis also sponsored a Reading Room where the books are displayed and the children come to select the book they have earned.
Yorkwoods is an elementary school located in the Jane and Finch area. The population of Yorkwoods consists largely of students whose first language is not English, therefore programs targeted at improving literacy are very important to the school. At the first assembly of the current school year, representatives of the North York Kiwanis club were in attendance to present the school with signs recognizing the Reading Awards Program.
In conjunction with the Salvation Army and assisted by members of Northview Heights Key Club, on December 5th. the club entertained 100 local children at a Christmas Party at Yorkwoods Community Church. After enjoying tricks by a clever magician, each child received from Santa a present provided by the club and a hot meal of pizza and pop. This was the fourth annual event hosted by the club and the most successful to date.
A new member of the Kiwanis family has been born in North York. Northview Heights Key Club held its organizational meeting on October 27. Its members are students at Northview Heights Secondary School. The club is supported by school staff and sponsored by North York Kiwanis Club. Key Club is the oldest and largest service program for high school students. It succeeds because it is student-led and teaches leadership through serving others. Key Club members build themselves as they build their schools and communities.
