Club News
New Government regulations banning smoking in Bingo halls have had a severe negative impact on our fund-raising. Nevertheless, by adding funds from our Charitable Trust, we have been able to make donations to North York General Hospital (Kiwanis Young Moms and Babies programme and Teddy Bears for young in-patients), Toronto Fire Services (Risk Watch Safety program for students), Easter Seal Society (North York Kiwanis Albert Kokotow Memorial Endowment Fund for musical instruments at Woodeden Summer camp), Scouts Canada (Haliburton Camp), and the Rhett Foundation. We have also given our annual Scholarship to one student at Earl Haig Secondary School.
Members have volunteered many hours working for the Kiwanis Music Festival, North York Harvest Food Bank, UNICEF, the Salvation Army (kid’s Christmas party at Yorkwoods Community Church) and Youth Assisting Youth (annual summer picnic). We also led a clean up of G. Ross Lord Park in April.
This summer, we have paid for 19 kindergarten kids to have swimming lessons at the Humberwood Community Pool, arranged by the Macaulay Child Development Centre. As well, we have covered the cost for three underprivileged children to go to Scout Camp.
Again, we are operating the parking lot at the Adult Learning Centre during TASTE OF THE DANFORTH, August 10 -12. LEAVE YOUR CAR WITH US AT DANFORTH & BROADVIEW AND SUPPORT THE KIWANIS MUSIC FESTIVAL.
Kiwanis in Canada has launched an appeal for clubs to make annual donations to UNICEF through the Kiwanis foundation of Canada to fund programmes to fight AIDS in young African children. We have gladly contributed.
Books have been ordered for a new library at Yorkwoods Public School as part of the schools’ “Future Aces” programme to improve students’ reading skills. It should be set up in September with the assistance of club members.
